Geoff frequently travels for his job. Lately he's been taking 2-3 trips per month. Most of his travels take him to North Africa and places not suitable for a family. However, over the last year, he's also had to make several trips to Copenhagen, Denmark for various meetings. So when Geoff realized his April trip to Copenhagen was over the girls' school break, he asked me if I wanted to go to Copenhagen for a long weekend. My immediate answer was "Yes, of course!". But then the next thought hit me that since he would already be in the city for his meetings, if I and the kids wanted to join him for the weekend it would require me flying solo with all of them.
Me. Three small kids. Suitcases. Stroller. Backpacks and a diaper bag. Airports and airplanes. Yeah...that sounded like a disaster in the making and I started to change my tune pretty quickly. However, I'm not one to back away from challenges and to miss out on opportunities, especially when it involves exploring new destinations, so I changed my mind, took a deep breath (or several) and told him to book the tickets.
The trip was easy when they were like this in the taxi on the way to the airport!
Thankfully getting to the airport, checking in, making our way to the plane, the flight, retrieving our luggage in Copenhagen and then getting the four of us to the hotel went so smoothly. I gave the girls a big pep talk (and bribes were definitely involved!) before the trip and they were well behaved and my helpers throughout our entire journey. Quinn was good too and I had many kind people along the way (feeling sorry for me, I'm certain) offer their assistance.
We had two full days in the city. Our first day there didn't go quite the way we had hoped, with a series of missed buses, museums closing early and cold rain. However, we did manage to take a boat tour around the canals/river/harbour which provided us with an overview of the city.
You can't go to Copenhagen and not see the famous Little Mermaid statue. But can you say overrated???
Our second day there, we took a short bus tour around the city before deboarding at Tivoli Gardens, the second oldest amusement park in the world which is in the center of the city. Oh My Goodness! What a day! We had SO MUCH FUN. I really think it was one of the funnest days we've ever had as a family that I can remember. Am I allowed to say that it was more fun than Disneyland Paris???
The rides were super cute and there were plenty of them for small children. The crowds were nonexistent which meant no standing in lines and allowed us to ride our favorites over and over again. While Tivoli, or the "Fun Fair" as the girls called it, had plenty to offer and we put in a full day there, it wasn't overly big and therefore felt manageable. Plus, it was just so darn quaint with an old-time charm about it.
Olivia LOVES giraffes, so you can imagine how excited she was to be able to ride one!
Look at Ashton's face! That face sums up the day: pure joy and excitement. This was our favorite ride. The girls rode the roller coaster at least three times.
What about Quinn you may be asking? Well, this is what he thought about the day. There were actually a few mild rides that he rode on with us. Otherwise, Geoff and I took turns staying with him and going on the rides with the girls.
